Lady Eagles Race Through Round 1

Jaycie Johnson lofts one up in the paint against Cathedral Academy Friday.

SUMTER – The Richard Winn Academy Lady Eagles started off their playoff run Friday with a dominant performance at Wilson Hall, pummeling Cathedral Academy 66-27.

The Lady Eagles started the game off with a 25-2 run led by Jessie Stidham’s 8 points as Richard Winn used their defense to spark their scoring output.

The Lady Eagles continued their excellent play in the second quarter with a 22-6 run led by Jaycie Johnson’s 6 points. The Lady Eagles’ full-court pressure proved problematic for the Lady Generals, whose struggles on both sides of the ball sent them into the locker room at the half trailing 47-8.

Richard Winn continued their drive after the break, starting off the third quarter with an 8-0 run. The Lady Eagles all around scoring continued to overwhelm Cathedral whose offensive woes hampered them all night long. The Lady Eagles proved to be too much for Cathedral, despite the Lady Generals’ late scoring output to cut into the deficit.

“I was very happy with our team’s performance tonight as we needed to get off to a good start in these playoffs,” RWA head coach Jason Haltiwanger said. “The best teams win in the playoffs off runs and if we want to hoist the State Championship trophy again we have to play mistake-free basketball again as we did tonight.”

The Lady Eagles play round 2 Feb. 23 at Wilson Hall in Sumter.
