RICHLAND COUNTY – More than 30 young athletes gathered at Killian Park on Sunday for the Richland County Recreation Commission’s (RCRC) inaugural Boys Volleyball Clinic, an event led by a Blythewood High School program that has seen its own meteoric rise in recent years.

The free clinic focused on the fundamentals of the sport, with participants rotating through skill stations led by Blythewood High players and coaches. The varsity volunteers provided hands-on training in passing, serving, setting, hitting, and footwork for what RCRC Assistant Deputy Director of Operations Barry Belville noted is one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports.

The involvement of the Blythewood High program added a layer of local expertise to the event. Though the Bengals have only been on the court for two seasons, they have already established a winning tradition. In their 2024 inaugural season, the Bengals finished 17-5 and secured the first playoff win in program history. This past year, the team took another step forward, finishing a perfect 6-0 in region play to capture their first region title.

Belville said he was thrilled with the turnout for the two-hour clinic and praised the boys’ program for playing their part.

“Their dedication, leadership, and commitment is growing boys volleyball in our community,” Belville said. “Their support helped make this first clinic a memorable experience for every participant.”

The clinic served as the official launchpad for RCRC’s newest youth sports program. This fall, boys volleyball will become an official league for the commission.

The growth of the sport is evident at both the youth and high school levels. While RCRC prepares for its first season, the Blythewood Bengals are preparing for their own 2026 campaign, which is set to open Aug. 17 at AC Flora.

Registration for the inaugural RCRC fall season is currently open and will run through Aug. 17. The league is designed to provide a competitive environment for boys to develop their skills and continue the momentum established by the local high school ranks.
