BLYTHEWOOD – Blythewood softball (12-4, 8-2) also got a win at Sumter Thursday as Charlotte Martin scattered seven hits over six innings and struck out four in a 3-1 win over the Gamecocks. Makalah Ford tripled and drove in two runs in the Bengals’ 3-run sixth inning.
Down 1-0 since the first inning, Blythewood got its rally started with two outs in the sixth. Molly Wolf singled to rightfield, Rhames Weisinger reached on an infield error. Cici Martin tied the game at one when she drove in Wolf on a ground single to centerfield.
With Zalayha Rhodes, running for Weisinger, at second and Ford at first, Ford slammed the first pitch on a line drive into centerfield that easily scored both runners and put Ford at third.
The inning ended on a strikeout, but Martin pitched a scoreless sixth and Lily Zelle was in the circle for the seventh and sat the Gamecocks down in order on ground outs to end the game.
Blythewood fell 6-4 to nonregion opponent North Augusta at home Tuesday. Rhames Weisinger went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Rhodes homered.
Blythewood softball takes on Darlington Thursday. Ridge View softball forfeited its games against the Bengals that were scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, which means Blythewood will finish region play at 10-2, second behind region leader West Florence (16-1, 9-0)
