LAURENS – The Richard Winn Academy Eagles reached 8-0 after a dominating victory against the Laurens Academy Crusaders on Friday, October 25.
Quarterback Charlie Bonds led the Eagle offense to a 62-12 victory over the Crusaders, running the ball seven times for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Bonds completed 75% of his passes for 111 yards and one score.
Eli Smith carried the ball eight times for the Eagles, rushing for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Hoffman Sharpe scored on a 35-yard touchdown run, and Dylan Albert also had one carry for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Josh Tyndall was the lone Eagle receiver, hauling in three passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles recorded 454 yards of total offense, and were perfect on point after plays, completing eight two-point conversions.
Bennett Nicholson rounded out the Eagle scoring with an interception he returned 99 yards for the score.
Bonds also led the Eagle defense with eight tackles and an interception. Sharpe had eight tackles and sacked Crusaders quarterback Ethan Collins once. Collins was 18 for 28 passing for 194 yards, and despite rushing for 201 yards, the Crusaders only found the end zone twice.
Jake Gaillard made seven tackles and broke up two Collins passes. Aaron Geddings recorded six tackles with one for loss. Nicholson had four tackles and a fumble recovery.
Richard Winn Head Coach Paul Brigman praised his team’s work ethic throughout the week. “The team did an excellent job of preparing and going out and getting a big road win this past week.” The Eagles will win their region with a win on Friday night. Brigman said, “Our guys have worked hard to put themselves in a position to win the region and go into the playoffs with momentum.” Brigman also acknowledged the focus required to succeed in the playoffs, saying, “We know that as we get nearer to the playoffs our competition will be tougher.”
The Eagles seek to finish their perfect season against the Wardlaw Academy Patriots, who the Eagles defeated 30-16 in September. The Patriots will travel to Ruff Field in hopes of avenging their only loss behind senior quarterback Colt Bailey, who is averaging 233 rushing yards per game with 26 running touchdowns. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm at Ruff Field in Winnsboro.
