BLYTHEWOOD – With their Tuesday win over Lugoff-Elgin, Westwood High School’s volleyball program has the region title all wrapped up – they just need to add the bow.
The Redhawks took down Lugoff-Elgin with a decisive 3-0 win on Tuesday to clench the top spot in 4A Region 5. The Redhawks opened play with a dominating 25-8 win over the Demons in game one, then followed with 25-21 and 25-18 wins to wrap up the game.
The loss moved Lugoff-Elgin to 4-3 in region play, second to Westwood’s 7-0 record.
Westwood’s win was their ninth in a row of the season. They defeated Richland Northeast last Tuesday by impressive 25-5, 25-9 and 25-5 margins. The Redhawks sit at 12-1 with their only loss coming to 5A River Bluff in early September.
The Redhawks have three games remaining in the regular season, all region contests. They look to claim the region title for the first time since the 2019-2020 season, when they went 10-0 in region play.
Westwood will host Ridge View tonight for their final home game of the season. They’ll travel to Irmo next Tuesday and Richland Northeast on Oct. 12, then will await post-season seeding.
According to the bracket posted on the South Carolina High School League’s website, a top spot in Region 5 will give Westwood a round 1 bye in the 4A girls’ volleyball playoffs. Round one begins Oct. 19. If granted a first round bye, the Redhawks would play in their first playoff game at home on Oct. 24.
