Fans were treated to an exciting game Saturday, as the Westwood Redhawks traveled to A.C. Flora High School for a region showdown. The winner was uncertain until the end of overtime when Flora held off the ‘Hawks for a 50-48 victory.
“We played well, though we were minus five players,” Westwood head coach Terry Dozier said. “What hurt us is what hurt us all season, namely turnovers. It’s disappointing that we didn’t get it. We should have won.”
Despite the close loss to flora, Tuesday night, the Redhawks wouldn’t come so close to victory against the Camden Bulldogs. The Bulldogs decisively beat Westwood in a relatively low scoring game, 41-25.
“This team beat a team (Dreher) who beat us, so we have to respect them,” Dozier said.
The game started well for the Redhawks. They outscored the Bulldogs in the first period 7-5. Arguably their best outside shooter, and the smallest player on the team, Soloman Walden, hit a 3-pointer and Austin Madison and Adonus Lee each scored a field goal.
In the second period, Camden began their comeback as they scored no less than three 3-point shots and two field goals to outpace the Redhawks 13-9 in that period. As the half ended, the bulldogs enjoyed a slim lead, 18-16.
The game would begin to seriously slip out of Westwood’s reach during the third period as the breaks mostly went the way of the Bulldogs. Camden’s Alexx Cooke hit two 3-point shots to lead the team to a 29-22 margin by the end of the quarter. The fourth period would be a disaster for Westwood. Already down seven points, the team would score no points at all from the field, and only three points total, all from free-throws.
Westwood’s high scorer, Rashad Harris, only put seven points on the board.
The Redhawks will attempt to improve on their 5-11 season record Friday when they host Lower Richland High School. The game will begin immediately following the girls’ game, which begins at 6 p.m.
