This past Wednesday I had a very hard day at work. There was a lot of heavy lifting, and for a man who is approximately twenty-five years past his physical prime that is not a good thing. I just don’t recover as quickly as when I was younger. When I got home, I sat down in my recliner and just dozed off. When I woke up, it was time for church.
It was at this point that I began to rationalize in my mind why the Lord’s church would be okay if I did not make it to church that evening. I mean, I wasn’t teaching a class nor was I scheduled to do anything else. Surely God would understand my extreme fatigue and give me a pass. Brethren, did I mention that I was exhausted?
I know it may surprise you that I even entertained such a thought, but brothers and sisters I am human and thus am subject to such thoughts in moments of exhaustion. Sorry about that.
Just about the time I had these thoughts, I came to my senses. I reminded myself that Jesus didn’t suffer the pain and agony of the cross so that I could be lazy in my faith. Was He not mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted when He went to the cross to save me from my sins? How could I honestly say in my heart I was exhausted to the point that I could not make it to church?
So I got up, freshened up, and went to assemble with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. And guess what? I had a great time! We had a lively class discussion and had some great fellowship afterwards. I was strengthened spiritually because I made it to the Wednesday night service.
When you are exhausted and are contemplating staying at home instead of meeting with the saints, just remember what Jesus endured for you so you could be saved from your sins and have a home in heaven. If you will do this, it will help you to get up and go meet with the saints so you can thank God for the multitude of blessings He has given you.
