DETROIT – Former Bengal and Gamecock baseball standout Grayson Greiner has it made to the majors. Greiner was called-up to the Detroit Tiger’s 40-man roster on Monday to protect him from inclusion in Major League Baseball’s Rule Five Draft.
Greiner has 26 homeruns, 261 hits and 123 RBIs in 309 minor league games. He has a .245 average in 1,065 at bats, .376 slugging percentage and, prior to being called up, the Tigers had him listed as their 22-ranked prospect.
Greiner was the number-one rated catcher and number six-overall prospect in the State as a high schooler. He was selected to SEC All-freshman team at South Carolina and made the College Baseball Freshman All-America Team his freshman year at USC.
He was on the watch list for the Johnny Bench award for the best catcher in 2013 and was a semi-finalist for the award in 2014. After 157 games in the AA level, he was called up to the AAA Toledo Mudhens last season.
Greiner hosts the second annual Grand Slam Baseball Camp in January at Blythewood High.
