My mother’s home is in a subdivision in Middle Tennessee that is surrounded by beautiful hills. Looking toward the entrance of the subdivision from her home is one hill in the background that has been cleared right down the middle in order to accommodate high-powered electric lines. At the very top of the hill are giant poles that house the electric lines. These poles look like crosses.
Every time I look up on that hill I am reminded of the three crosses the Bible depicts when Jesus was crucified. John (19:17,18) says, “And He (Jesus), bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.”
Not only I am reminded of the cross of Christ when I look at the top of that hill, I am also reminded of the fact Jesus suffered tremendous amounts of pain and agony while He was on that cross. He suffered this pain and agony so all of us might be forgiven of our sins and thus avoid the eternal pain of hell.
Surely we should all rejoice that God loved us so much that He gave Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins. The apostle John writes of this love God has for us in a section of Scripture that is familiar to many people. John (3:16,17) says, “For God so loved the world that He gave us His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
Sometimes it is something as common as an electric pole set on a hill that can remind us of the sacred and spectacular work of God. What is it in your ordinary, everyday life experience that reminds you of the wondrous works of God?
