Bengals Have Wealth of Talent at QB Position
Heading into the 2012 football season Blythewood head coach Reggie Kennedy has dealt with the task of choosing a starting quarterback. Kennedy had three seniors to choose from: Kylin Binn, Joe Britt and Travis Palmer. All three have shown potential during scrimmages and practice but one player has separated himself from the others. Heading into week one against South Pointe on Aug. 24 it will be Binn leading the Bengals on offense.
“He’s just moving the offense right now and putting the ball in the end zone,” Kennedy said. “He has a strong arm and has been more consistent with his throws.”
Binn sat out last season after transferring to Blythewood from Spring Valley. Chemistry has been key for the new quarterback and he has meshed well with his receivers.
“He does a good job of spreading the ball all over,” Kennedy said.
Shyheim Brown and Javon Smith are two receivers that make Binn’s job a little bit easier.
“They know how to adjust their routes according to the coverage,” Kennedy said. “They talk to him (Binn) and let him know some of the things they see on the field.”
Both Brown and Smith are starters returning from last season, when they combined for 26 catches, 483 yards and two touchdowns. In Blythewood’s final scrimmage against Dutch Fork on Aug. 16 Brown was solid in the return game and hauled in a long pass from Palmer where he was eventually downed at the 1-yard line. Palmer and Britt are in a heated competition for the backup role at quarterback and after the scrimmage against Dutch Fork Kennedy said, “Travis (Palmer) had better execution tonight than Joe (Britt) did. Travis did a good job moving the offense and putting us in scoring positions.”
With eight days left until the start of the regular season the backup role behind Binn was still up in the air. Palmer led a junior varsity team that was 9-1 last year and Britt played sparingly on the varsity team, completing 18 of 36 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown.
“They both bring something good and different to the table,” Kennedy said. “I’m going to have specialty plays that will give them both the chance to contribute.”
Competition for the backup role is not limited to play on the field.
“Every day we watch our practice from the previous day and we have a system online where players can go home and watch as well,” Kennedy said.
With either Palmer or Britt backing up Binn the Bengals can’t go wrong at quarterback.
