The View from 95: Aliens on Earth

What would aliens think if they arrived in America? First off, they would think that we took a lot of  medicine and sued each other every day. They probably would think we had poor health and bad dispositions. I don’t think poor health is the cause of all the class action ads – the pharmaceutical companies want to sell the new, improved drugs they have worked to  develop. We have to sue to have the money to buy these great medicines!

I think the aliens would think Earth is quite a looker. We have trees, rivers, oceans and even flowers! Based on discoveries so far, the other bodies in space look barren and bleak. What would you think of the first tree you ever saw?  I know some American Westerners are pretty impressed with our Southern forests.  On his first visit, one actually asked us if we planted all those trees!

They would probably wonder at our use of the land.  Often small houses are sitting in the middle of acres and acres of land and huge houses are packed in like sardines with no space in between.  Let’s  say it is for protection from wild animals!

Speaking of animals, do you think aliens have animals on their planet?  I’ve yet to see that possibility explored. It’s hard enough to imagine what the people would look like without guessing about their pets.  Maybe they don’t have pets.  How sad! That’s another reason to not want to live on Mars.

With no animals or fish, as I have never seen any water, I wonder what they eat.  Would they like our food? Maybe they don’t eat. That is a terrible thought. But if they have life, it has to be sustained, so they probably like steak and ice cream just like us. Can’t wait to see them eat their first fried chicken!

What would they think of our cars and highways? Maybe they fly or just wish themselves from place to place.  Cheaper than gas!

Do they have wars and destroy a group of aliens they don’t like or disagree with?  They may require us to get rid of our nuclear energy and destroy our atomic bombs if we are going to be friends.  Maybe that would be a good thing!

Speculation about life elsewhere in the universe has always existed.  The big question is, of course, “Is there life and what is it like?”  Do we want it to be there? How would we communicate? How different are they? What would they think of us?  I wonder if they have any single men?  Maybe they don’t marry.  Hah!  Better yet!

This wondering has become more a  part of our current thinking with the popularity of science fiction and the space program.

I have no idea where this comes from, but we have been led to believe that aliens, if there are any, are more advanced beings and very smart. Their heads are bigger than their bodies to hold all their brains.  Walt Disney must have done the drawing we were sold back in the 40s.  If they are so smart why haven’t they found us?  They had better hurry, my time is running out!
