BLYTHEWOOD— Brass Jersey and Carolina Pettway combined for four hits Thursday night, but the Westwood softball team was unable to keep pace with a surging Spring Valley offense in a 15-3 loss.
Jersey led the way for the Redhawks at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double. Pettway also turned in a 2-for-3 performance. In total, Westwood tallied six hits on the night, but struggled to string them together against Spring Valley starter Mollie Lankford, who earned the win with six strikeouts.
Defensive miscues proved costly for the Redhawks, as the team committed six errors during the contest. Spring Valley took advantage of the extra opportunities, racking up 13 hits. The Vikings were led by Dahlia Nora, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Westwood got on the board in the first inning and added runs in the fourth and sixth, but Spring Valley’s four-run bursts in the fifth and sixth innings ultimately ended the game early via the run rule.
The Redhawks will look to tighten up the defense as they prepare for their next region matchup following the break.
They next week return to a three-game stretch, starting with Lugoff-Elgin at home on Tuesday. They’ll host Central on Wednesday, then travel to Lugoff-Elgin on Thursday for a region rematch.
