Griffins look to turn the page in final season stretch

WINNSBORO – In a gauntlet of a week for the Fairfield Central Griffins, they faced a slate of high-powered regional opponents. While a string of challenging matchups against Clinton, Newberry, and Mid-Carolina didn’t fall the Griffins’ way, the team showed flashes of offensive grit and defensive resilience that they look to build upon as the season progresses.

The week began and ended with tough matchups against a dominant Clinton squad. On April 14, the Griffins fell 12-0 as Clinton’s Jaydon Glenn tossed four innings of no-hit ball. Fairfield Central starter Landon Morgan battled through five innings on the mound, but Clinton’s 13-hit attack proved too much to overcome. The rematch on April 17 saw a similar result, a 15-0 loss where Caden Brown recorded the lone hit for the Griffins.

The most productive offensive showing of the week came on April 15 in a high-scoring 17-7 loss to Newberry. In this contest, the Griffins’ bats found a spark, tallying 10 total hits.

Landon Morgan was a standout at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Mason Jackson-Nellums added two hits of his own. Jayshawn Worthy provided the power in the cleanup spot, driving in two runs.

The Griffins also displayed aggressive baserunning, amassing seven stolen bases, including multiple swipes from both Jackson-Nellums and Bentley Trapp. Newberry, however, countered with 11 hits and 11 walks to stay ahead.

Fairfield hosted Mid-Carolina on April 21, falling 14-0. Brandon Adams led the Griffins with a hit, but Mid-Carolina’s Lawson Lawrence kept the Fairfield bats quiet for most of the afternoon.

Despite the recent slide, the Griffins have remained active defensively, turning five double plays over the four-game span. They looked to break the streak and find the win column against Dreher on Wednesday. Scores were not available prior to The Voice’s press deadline. As the regular season winds down, the Griffins travel to  Mid-Carolina on Friday, then host Eau Claire for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday.
