Eagle softball recovers from loss with double-digit routs

WINNSBORO — After a loss to Lewisville High School on April 17, Richard Winn’s softball team responded by turning the diamond into a launchpad.

The Eagles (2-1 in their last three) outscored their opponents 34-9 over their last two contests.

Richard Winn’s most recent win came last Thursday at home, where they erased an early deficit to thump Jefferson Davis Academy 15-5 in five innings. The Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning behind two doubles, but the Eagles’ comeback began immediately with a solo home run by Prevatt in the bottom of the frame.

Richard WInn took the lead for good in the third inning before ending the game with a 10-run explosion in the fourth. Addison Trapp and Abby Lewis each drove in runs during the rally, while Prevatt added a two-run triple. Prevatt earned the win from the circle, recovering from a shaky start to strike out six and allow only three hits over five innings.

The explosion at the plate was a continuation of the team’s April 21 performance at region foe Wardlaw Academy, where the Eagles dismantled the Patriots 19-4.

Prevatt dominated the afternoon with six RBIs, including a grand slam to center during a 15-run fourth inning. She also tripled in the third. Leadoff hitter Mary Margaret Swearingen was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4, while Lewis and Langley Thompson combined for four RBIs. Kaila McLean earned the win, allowing nine hits over four innings of work.

The back-to-back blowouts were as a redemption of sorts following an 8-2 loss at Lewisville on April 17.

In that contest, the Eagles actually out-hit Lewisville 6-1 but were undone by lack of command and defensive miscues. Richard Winn pitchers issued nine walks and the defense committed two errors, allowing Lewisville to score eight runs despite a strong individual effort from Prevatt, who struck out eight and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Thompson provided the only other RBI in the loss, going 1-for-3.

Richard Winn looks to carry that momentum forward as they hit the final stretch of regular season. They were slated to face off with Fairfield Central on Wednesday, but scores were not available prior to The Voice’s press deadline. They’re back on the field Thursday at home against Great Falls. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
