WINNSBORO – With a 5-0 record in region play, Richard Winn is already looking to secure another SCISA A region title.
The Eagles have outscored their region opponents 60-18 in the five games they’ve played.
Their most recent region victim: Newberry Academy.
The Eagles hosted Newberry Academy on Tuesday for what might have felt like an April Fool’s joke for the Newberry Eagles. Richard Winn dominated with a 15-0 final in just four innings.
Senior Charlie Bonds drove in four runs on two hits to lead the Eagles at the plate. He had a two-run shot to center in the first inning, then doubled in the fourth to score two more.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first after Dylan Albert doubled, scoring one. Bonds’ two-run homer put the Eagles up 3-0, and an RBI single from Owen Martin put Richard Winn on top 4-0.
With a scoreless second inning, the Eagles got back in gear in the bottom of the third.
Turner Burchell doubled to left, then scored on a single from Martin. Later, a fielder’s choice put Martin out advancing to home. With the bases loaded, Albert singled to left to score three (two on error) before a fly out ended the inning.
Leading 8-0, Richard Winn scored seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. Adrian Jackson singled to score two. An error scored one. Albert and Charlie Bonds both hit RBI doubles. Johnathan Bonds singled to score another and put the game to bed at 15-0.
The Eagles tallied 15 hits and 15 runs (seven earned) in the four-inning stretch. Albert went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Charlie Bonds struck out 12 batters on the day. He allowed no hits and no runs and walked one.
The win moves the Eagles to 8-2 on the season. They’ll host a stout Greenwood Christian squad tonight for a 6 p.m. game. Next week, Richard Winn travels to Newberry Academy on Tuesday and Laurens Academy on Thursday. They’re set to face Fairfield Central in back-to-back 6 p.m. games on April 14 and 15.
