BLYTHEWOOD – After winning 14 straight games, the Blythewood baseball team fell 4-1 Tuesday at Sumter.
The Gamecocks (14-2, 8-1 Region 5-5A) tied the game at 1 with Amare Counts’ solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, but Sumter answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and got another run in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
Blythewood closed out a 13-0, 5-inning victory at West Florence Thursday. Bowman Rummel got the win, giving up four hits and striking out two. Jackson Bottar had two doubles and batted in three runs. Johnny Collins had three hits, including two doubles and drove in three runs. Counts also homered in that game and had three RBI. Porter Rummel had two hits.
The baseball team plays host to Sumter (9-8) tonight and heads to Charleston for a baseball tournament over Spring Break. They return to face Ridge View in a two-game stretch the following week. Blythewood will host the Blazers on April 22, then travel to Ridge View on April 24. First pitch for both is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Blythewood softball team (14-5, 6-3) lost their third straight game Tuesday as the Gamecocks shut out the Bengals 8-0 on the strength of pitcher Lillie Ivey, who pitched a complete-game 6-hitter, striking out six.
That defeat came after Blythewood’s second straight loss to West Florence and ace Annie Ruth Eliason, who struck out 14 in a complete-game 3-hitter.
Now 14-5 on the season, Blythewood plays host to Sumter tonight and takes on non-region foe South Florence Friday. They are slated to return from spring break with back-to-back games against Ridge View on April 22 and 24. The Bengals will host the Blazers for the Tuesday game and travel for Thursday’s game. Both are set for 6 p.m.
