WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central baseball picked up a win over Westwood High School last Wednesday, but dropped a game to Great Falls on Saturday.
The Griffins opened scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Landon Morgan hit an RBI single. C Brown followed with a two-out RBI single to put Fairfield up 2-0 early.
The Griffins added tow more to their lead in the bottom of the second when Graeme Douglas hit an RBI doubled to center. The Griffins plated their second run of the inning by capitalizing on a passed ball.
Both teams remained scoreless in the third. Fairfield extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Kaden Diggs led off the inning with a single to right field, then stole second. Trey Wilcox singled on a bunt that scored Diggs.
Westwood scored in the top of the fifth off of a Griffin fielding error.
No harm done as Fairfield made up the run in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, Diggs drew a walk to score a run.
Diggs earned the win for Fairfield. In 5.1 innings of work, Diggs faced 21 batters. He allowed only 2 hits and one run. He walked one and struck out eight.
The Griffins held Westwood scoreless in the sixth to take the 6-1 win.
With a second win under their belt, Fairfield dropped their second game of the season against Great Falls on Saturday.
Great Falls went up 4-0 in the bottom of the first.
Fairfield tied the game up in the top fo the third.
With one out, Diggs drew a walk. Wilcox singled to right to score Diggs. Douglas reached on a fielding error that advanced Wilcox to second. Another Red Devils error off of a K Jones hit loaded the bases. Favors singled to left to score Wilcox and Douglas. A pickoff and a strikeout ended the Griffin rally early.
Great Falls took the lead with two RBI-singles in the bottom of the fifth. They added another run in the bottom of the sixth to go up by three.
Unable to rally in the top of the seventh, Fairfield surrendered the 7-4 loss to Great Falls.
Douglas took the loss on the mound. He faced 26 batters in five innings. He allowed six hits and six runs (three earned). He walked one and struck out nine.
Landon Morgan threw one inning of relief. He allowed one hit and one run, and he struck out one.
