Eagles drop season opener by one run

BATESBURG – Richard Winn softball opened their season on the road with a region game at Wardlaw Academy.

The Eagles got on the board first, scoring two in the first. Mary Margaret Swearingen was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. She advanced to second on a passed ball. Abby Lewis followed with a single to right that scored Swearingen. Langley Thompson drew a walk to advance Lewis to second. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before a line drive to left off the bat of Hayden Branham scored Lewis. Two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice ended the inning with Thompson and Branham on base.

A fielder’s choice from Thompson scored another for the Eagles in the top of the second, but Wardlaw tied the score at three in the bottom of the frame.

Richard Winn pulled ahead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to center from Thompson.

Wardlaw took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs.

Down 6-4 with only two at-bats left, the Eagles rallied to score four and take a 8-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

Wardlaw recovered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 9-8 lead. They held the Eagles scoreless in the top of the seventh and claim the 9-8 win.

Tolbert took the loss from the mound. In six innings of work, she faced 33 batters. She allowed 14 hits and nine runs (eight earned). She walked one and struck out two.
