
COLUMBIA – With three wins and a 3-1 shootout, Blythewood girls’ soccer team claimed the program’s first ever Viking Cup over the weekend.
The preseason tournament featured Bengal action against Clover, West Ashley, Wando and Bishop England.
Blythewood opened play with a 1-0 win over Clover on Feb. 27 from a Caroline Powell score. Keeper Tiyanna Mack had eight saves in the win.
The Bengals advanced to face West Ashley on Saturday. With no score after regulation, Blythewood scored three in a shootout to advance to play Wando.
Regan Flynn and Mia Hendry scored goals for Blythewood to help the Bengals claim the 2-0 win and advance to the title game on Sunday. Mack had three saves.
Blythewood found another battle Sunday against Bishop England. With no score in the first half, it was a score from Mia Hendry that put Blythewood ahead in the second half. Blythewood held on for the 1-0 win to claim the Viking Cup title. Mack had six saves in the win.
Blythewood’s Viking Cup title win is the first in program history. They are the first Richland 2 team to win since 1999.
Blythewood moves into regular season play on Friday at Indian Land. They will host Westwood on March 11 for their home opener, then travel to Lexington on March 12 and Spring Valley on March 14.
