WINNSBORO – With a first round bye and a revenge win against Newberry Academy in the second round, Richard Winn’s boys’ basketball team seemed to be soaring through the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) 1A state bracket.
The Eagles’ flight path turned rocky last week when they ran into a tough Curtis Baptist squad in the semi-final round at Wilson Hall in Sumter.
With only four losses under their belts for the season, Richard Winn struggled to produce. The Crusaders escaped with a 41-33 win over the Eagles to end their playoff run just short of a state title game appearance.
The Eagles’ senior squad led offensive efforts. Charlie Bonds put up 14 of the Eagles’ 33 points, coupled with a team-high 10 rebounds. Josh Tyndell had nine points and Colin Davis chipped in eight.
Curtis Baptist advanced to face Ragin Prep in the Class 1A title game on Saturday. Ragin Prep claimed the title with a 57-52 win.
Richard Winn closed out their season with a 17-5 record.
