Bengals land high playoff seeds

BLYTHEWOOD – The Blythewood girls’ basketball team fell 55-47 at arch-rival Ridge View Friday night, but clinched a share of the Region 5-5A championship, their first since 2008, which was also a share of the title.

Sharon Walters scored 13 points to lead Blythewood. India Williams had 12. Chase Thomas, the Region 5-5A Player of the Year and leading scorer on the team with 23.7 points per game, had just 11 because she spent most of the first half on the bench in foul trouble.

Even though Blythewood ended the region slate on a down note, the Bengals (24-2, 11-1) own the tiebreak—the margin of victory between the two team’s two region games—which gave Blythewood a No.2 seeding in the 5A Division 1 playoffs upper-state bracket. The Bengals play host to No.7 James F. Byrnes (17-7) at Blythewood tonight.

Ridge View (18-8, 11-1) received a No. 5 seed in the 5A Division 1 lower-state bracket. The Blazers dismissed No.12 Stall 85-21 Tuesday.

Also on Friday, the Blythewood boys (20-5, 9-3) fell 77-68 to the Blazers (19-7, 12-0), who had secured the region title with a 64-52 win over the Bengals six days before.

Terrion Mack and Tyler Stephens scored 14 points apiece, and T.J. Lewis added 11 points to lead Blythewood.

Korie Corbett scored a game-high 24 points to lead Ridge View. Yale Davis had 16 points and R.J. Davis scored 11 points.

Ridge View is the No.1 seed in the lower state bracket of the 5A Division 1 playoffs. The Blazers played No.8 Carolina Forest matchup on Wednesday.

While finishing second in the region, Blythewood also has a high seeding, in the 5A Division 1 upper state bracket.

The No.3 Bengals play No.6 Byrnes (24-3) tonight. Sophomores Colt Fowler, and Fabian McClintock, seniors Evan Enos and Jamari Cullen, and junior Sukhi Singh average double figures in scoring for the Rebels.
