RIDGEWAY — Signs commemorating the state’s newest Scenic Byway were erected along roadways in Ridgeway on Thursday, Nov. 14.
The Piedmont Gateway Scenic Byway is the first new Scenic Byway to be designated in the state in over a decade and the first one not located at the beach or in the mountain areas.
This project began in 2016 when organizers Cal and Angela Harrison of Ridgeway saw an opportunity to showcase Fairfield County.
“This all started because we wanted to help preserve the nature and beauty of Fairfield County,” said Angela Harrison, who was a Ridgeway Town Councilwoman at the time.
The Piedmont Gateway Scenic Byway encompasses 26 total miles.
“We hope this Scenic Byway becomes a destination spot, for people like us,” Harrison said. “We love to travel to other communities and see the natural beauty that is abundant, and we want to share that with everyone.”
“We want to thank SCDOT, Senator Mike Fanning and Representative Annie for their help in getting this done,” Cal Harrison said.
“We also worked closely with Fairfield County, the Town of Ridgeway and the Town of Winnsboro to make accommodations and agreements to get this project completed. This project marks a great day for Fairfield County and all of those that love to be surrounded by the peace and beauty of nature.”
