WINNSBORO – There’s a new business in downtown Winnsboro.
Southern Kilt LLC has opened its doors to sell and consign quality furniture and home furnishings. MaryGail Douglas is the owner. While the shop is already open for business, an official ribbon cutting is set for Thursday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m.
“I am quite pleased with the initial reception to the store,” Douglas says. “With the help of my family, we’ve created a store that brings back many memories from our parents and grandparents time.”
Douglas says her shop showcases furniture pieces and furnishings that are of good quality and better than that – at great value.
“These furnishings are not disposable furniture pieces,” she says. “They come with stories, plus they’re built to last and priced to sell.”
The shop is not a new idea with Douglas. She says she’s always been interested in quality furniture pieces.
“The idea of the store arose after many conversations with older friends who had no idea what they were going to do with their things. Their most repeated statement is, ‘My children don’t want my things.’ But other people do want what you have. In this store, you will find things you didn’t know you needed,” Douglas said with a laugh. “That line came from my daughter-in-law.”
Therein, the birth of Southern Kilt …a place to bring things when decluttering.
“My purpose in opening the store,” Douglas says, “is to see what I can do to help somebody else and stay in touch with other people. That’s a driving force for me. It’s not just a resale shop. It serves as a place where people can come and visit, enjoy good memories and make new friends.”
She says it is also an affirmation of her hope that Winnsboro’s Main Street can be restored to thriving and not just surviving.
“Small businesses must have support to thrive,” she says. “This can happen with the help and support of the public and from our leadership at the town and county levels as well.”
Douglas says she is thrilled that many of her customers say they find Fairfield County a special place.
“Our customers and consigners come from all over the county,” Douglas says. “It is my hope that Southern Kilt will offer an opportunity for people to come in, browse and visit.
“That could benefit all of us in many ways,” she said with a smile.
