COLUMBIA – Westwood High School’s cross country team competed in the Highlander Invitational at Heathwood Hall on Oc. 5.
Senior standout Emma Ashley was a highlight on the day. Ashley had her season-fastest time of 18:24.32 to finish in fourth place out of 193 runners.
The Redhawk girls finished 13th out of 21 teams. Philip Simmons took first place with 59 points.
Christina Tyndall finished 34th with a time of 20:00.25, her season-best time. Jamiya Carter clocked in at 23:12.88. Amira Coleman and Olivia Vesselee had their season-fastest times of 24:09.80 and 24:41.68 respectively.
Westwood’s boys finished in 24th place out of 30 teams. Philip Simmons finished in first place at 39 points.
Sean Bullock had the fastest time for Westwood. He placed 76th out of 252 runners with a time of 18:12.63. Blaize Owen, Ty Owen, Kameron Williams and Alexander Drakes all had their season-best times to complete the Redhawks’ score.
Blaize Owen finished at 19:25.83; Ty Owen crossed the line at the 19:36.69 mark. Williams’s time was 20:16.16, and Drakes clocked in at 20:38.91.
The Redhawks are set to run in the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic at Newberry’s Cross Country course on Oct. 12. They will host CA Johnson, Columbia, Fairfield Central, Midlands STEM Charter School, Richland Northeast, Richard Winn Academy, Ridge View, and Spring Valley on Oct. 16 at The Castle.
