BLYTHEWOOD – Camryn Jeffery has been an anchor for the Westwood volleyball team since her freshman year in 2021. In a match across town against school rival Blythewood High School on Sept. 25, she made school history.
The 6-2 right-side hitter reached the 1,000-kill milestone of her high school career with a back-row attack as the Redhawks defeated Blythewood 3-1. Jeffery is the first Westwood player to reach the mark.
“This has been a goal of mine since my freshman year,” Jeffery said. “It’s a blessing and I’m very excited that I was able to reach my goal as the first volleyball player at Westwood to do so.”
Jeffery has been regularly lighting up the scoreboard. As a freshman in 2021, she was Region 4-4A player of the year, and was the Region 5-4A player of the year her sophomore and junior years. She was an all-state selection in all three years as well.
This year, following her commitment to Louisiana State University in Nov. 2023, Jeffery had 318 kills going into the Blythewood match, averaging 7.11 kills per set. She needed just nine kills against the Bengals to reach the mark. She got 31.
“I want to thank all my teammates over the years because without them this wouldn’t be possible,” Jeffery said. “I also would like to thank Coach Ciji (Van Tyne), Coach (Garrett) Knight (the school’s athletic director) and my friends and family. I have enjoyed the last 4 years being a Redhawk and it has been an honor to wear a Westwood jersey.”
Jeffery’s 349 kills on the season puts her third in South Carolina, according to MaxPreps’ rankings. A dominant middle, she also is ranked seventh in the state in total blocks on the season with 65.
After the season, Jeffery will finish up her high school academic career and move on to LSU. The Tigers’ volleyball program was immediately attractive to her, she said.
“LSU has always been one of my top choices to play collegiately, and during my visit I loved the culture and the overall feel of the school,” Jeffery said. “I’m so thankful to Coach Tonya (Johnson, head coach), (and assistants) Jill (Wilson), Kevin (Inlow) and Ashley (Shook) for this opportunity. I’m excited to start a new journey and I’m looking forward to being a LSU Tiger.”
Westwood recognized Jeffery’s milestone at their home game against Ridge View on Wednesday (after The Voice’s press deadline). Heading into Wednesday’s match, Jeffery sits at 1019 career kills. With five regular season matches remaining, the upcoming post-season, and a current average of 24.92 kills per match, Jeffery’s numbers are expected to continue to climb.
Jeffery and Westwood (12-6, 8-0 Region 5-5A) rounds out the regular season with matches at Spring Valley Oct. 8, hosting Lugoff-Elgin Oct. 10, at West Florence Oct. 15 and hosting Sumter Oct. 17.
