BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood football team had three first-quarter touchdown plays called back because of penalties against Lakewood Friday night.
Eventually, the Redhawks fixed the miscues and put together a solid 35-0 victory over the Gators to collect their first win of the season.
Quarterback Carrington Carter connected with Tyrek Jenkins for a 19-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. Carter then tossed a 61-yard TD pass to Cameron Bennett to put the Redhawks up 14-0 with 2:41 in the first.
After an illegal formation flag set Westwood back on the Lakewood 6-yard line, Angelo Rios burst in from that distance to give the Redhawks a 21-lead midway through the second quarter, a lead they took into the locker room at halftime.
Carter and Jenkins hooked up again for a second 19-yard TD pass at the 3:38 mark of the third quarter.
Rios closed out the scoring with a 39-yard touchdown scamper with 2:57 left in the game.
The Redhawks (1-1) travel to Richland Northeast Friday to take on quarterback and N.C. State commit Will Wilson. The Cavaliers (2-0) beat Crestwood 36-32 last week, with Wilson passing for 367 yards, rushing for 153 yards, and scoring five total touchdowns.
