Redhawk VB downs Blythewood

BLYTHEWOOD – They are familiar cross-town foes, but now they are also region rivals.

Blythewood’s trip up Hwy 21 and under I-77 to Westwood on Tuesday wasn’t their first, but it was the first time the two teams have met as region opponents. In the new 2024-2025 SC High School League classification, Westwood moved up to 5A to join Blythewood in Region 5.

Fresh off of a 3-0 sweep of White Knoll, Blythewood opened play with a 25-21 win over the Redhawks in the first set at The Castle on Tuesday.

Down 1-0, the Redhawks’ wings would not be clipped. Westwood rallied back to take a tight 25-23 win in the second set over Blythewood.

Westwood found sturdier footing in the third set, taking a more decisive 25-16 win over the Bengals. Up 2-1, they closed out the match with a 25-21 final in the fourth set to take the 3-1 win, their first 5A Region 5 win.

The win is Westwood’s second in a row. They defeated North Augusta 2-0 last week.

Region action now underway, both teams will battle for another conference win tonight. Westwood (3-6, 1-0) travels to Ridge View; Blythewood will play host to Spring Valley. First serve is set for 7 p.m. for both matches.

Blythewood (5-5, 0-1) will travel to Lugoff-Elgin on Sept. 10, then host West Florence on Sept. 12. Westwood travels to White Knoll on Sept. 11 and hosts Spring Valley on Sept. 12.
