Bengals, Redhawks open XC seasons

BLYTHEWOOD – Westwood Cross Country hosted Blythewood High School, Lugoff-Elgin, Lower Richland, and Richard Winn Academy their first home meet of the season on Sept. 4. 

The Bengal boys and girls both claimed first place. Westwood’s girls finished in second; the boys’ team placed third.

Blythewood Boys

Blythewood’s top five runners claimed the top five spots, all under 18 minutes to sweep the field. Junior Jacob Powell placed first at 16:28 mark. Senior Spencer Shealy followed at 16:44. Dillan Boyer, a junior, finished at the 17:17 mark for third place, and senior Eureka Washington claimed fourth at 17:34.00. Anthony Knight, a sophomore, anchored the Bengals team score with a fifth place finish at 17:39.

Austin Dwiggins (18.43.00) and Johnathon Lenker (18:54) finished in the top ten at ninth and tenth places respectively.

The boys’ team finished in first with 15 points. Lugoff-Elgin followed in second with 45 points.

Blythewood Girls

The Bengal girls took first place with 29 points, just ahead of Westwood’s 37 points.

Senior Mallorie Hogue led the Bengals with a second-place overall finish at the 20:18 mark. Anna Kelly, a junior, followed on her heels for third place at 20:38. Eighth-grader Paige Kelly finished seventh at 23:04, and junior Scarlett Baker came in ninth place at the 24:26 mark. Eighth grader Madeline Lowery finished in 11th place at 24.33.

Sophomore Judeah Warren and senior Jurnee Warren came in 12th and 13th places respectively at 24:34 and 24:57.

Westwood Girls

Senior Emma Ashley finished in a familiar place for her first meet of the season – first. Ashley finished just over the 20 minute mark at 20:03. She was closely trailed by her sister, Rebecca Ashley, a ninth grader who finished fourth at 20:48. Sophomore Christina Tyndall came in sixth at 21:56. Seniors Sarah Danbury (25:14) and Jamiya Carter (25:42) rounded out the Redhawks’ top five in 14th and 17th.

The Redhawk girls put up 37 points for a second place finish.

Westwood Boys

The Redhawk boys were led by eighth grader Sean Bullock, who claimed 12th place at 18:58. Blaize Owen, a junior, came in 22nd at 20:25, and seventh grader Ty Owen finished 24th at 20:30. Alexander Drakes finished at 21:54 and Kameron Williams crossed the line at 21:55.

Eye Opener

Blythewood’s teams and the Westwood girls’ team competed in the Eye Opener at The Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg on Saturday.

Blythewood’s Anna Kelly took the top spot for the girls in the International Girls division. Out of 356 runners, Kelly finished in 11th place at 18:59.60. Mallorie Hogue finished in 18th place at 19:14.30. Westwood’s Emma Ashley came in 21st place with a time of 19:23.10. Rebecca Ashley came in 68th place at 20:59.60.

Blythewood’s girls finished in 19th place out of 35 teams. Westwood finished 26th.

The Bengal boys placed 10th out of 44 teams in the International Boys division. Jacob Powell led Blythewood with a ninth place finish out of 435 runners with a time of 15:46.10. Spencer Shealy placed 23rd at 16:03, and Dillan Boyer finished at 16:50 for 71st place.

Up Next

Both teams are set to run in the Mike More Classic on Saturday at Saluda Shoals Park, then will run in the Lake Murray Invitational on Sept. 21 in Chapin.
