Sheriff: Incident in Winnsboro Food Lion parking lot appears to be honest mistake

WINNSBORO – A report was filed with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 26, in reference to two suspicious men trying to get into a female’s vehicle in the Food Lion parking lot in Winnsboro.

According to a press release from the Sheriff’s office, this incident was very alarming to the female and she did the right thing by calling law enforcement and filing a report. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office quickly initiated an investigation and identified both men.

After speaking with both men separately it was determined that they did not arrive at Food Lion together. The older gentleman was approached by the younger gentleman about getting a ride home. They knew each other from a previous place of employment but hadn’t seen each other in about a year.

As they were walking to the older gentleman’s vehicle, the female was also walking to hers. When the men turned beside her vehicle the older man went on the driver side of the victim’s vehicle and the younger man went on the passenger side thinking this was the older man’s vehicle. Thinking that this was the older man’s vehicle the younger man mistakenly attempted to open the passenger door of the female’s vehicle.

Based on the evidence gathered by investigators it appears that the incident was an honest mistake. Sheriff Montgomery encourages the citizens of Fairfield County to always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. If you ever have an encounter, or see something that seems suspicious, immediately call 9-1-1 and a deputy will respond.

Because this incident was concerning to many who learned about it on through social media, The Voice is publishing the Sheriff’s investigation and clarification.
