Redhawks ink collegiate plans

BLYTHEWOOD – Five Westwood High School seniors signed their National Letters of Intent in a ceremony at Westwood last Wednesday.

Damia Ellis will continue her volleyball career at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL. Ellis, a setter and right side hitter for the Redhawks, had 338 assists in her senior season. She averaged 5.9 assists per set and tallied 128 digs, 94 kills, 45 blocks, and 30 aces in 57 sets played. She had a 49.5 kill percentage in her senior season. The Redhawks ended the 2023-2024 season with a perfect 10-0 record in region play and a 16-2 overall record.

Dontae Walters plans to continue his basketball career at Morris College in Sumter, SC. In his senior season at Westwood, Walters averaged 8.7 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game. He tallied 131 rebounds, 14 blocks, 13 assists and three steals in 20 games played in his senior year. Westwood ended the season with a 23-3 record and a Region Championship.

Tavaris Bell will continue his basketball career at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC. Bell, a guard for the Redhawks, was a team captain his senior year. He averaged 18.8 points per game in the 2023-2024 season. In 20 games played, Bell racked up 86 rebounds, 69 assists, 58 steals, and five blocked shots. Westwood ended the season with a 23-3 record and a Region Championship.

Ayanna Aarons will continue her track and field career at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC next year. Earlier this month, Aarons had her season-best time in the 200 meter dash (26.11) at the SCHSL 4A Region 5 meet. She took sixth place in the event and fifth place in the 100 meter dash (12.57). She claimed ninth in both events at the Lower State meet last weekend.

Tracie Harris will continue her softball career at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Harris saw time at third base and catcher this season. Harris tallied 10 hits, including a triple and two doubles, and five RBIs in her senior season. She drew 12 walks and had seven stolen bases. Her double against Irmo was the team’s only hit in the 1-0 loss. Westwood’s softball team ended the season 1-2 in the 4A playoffs; they went 10-14 on the season.
