WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central headed across Hwy 321 Bypass on Monday to take on Richard Winn.
The teams battled for seven innings, but it was the Eagles who came away with the 5-2 win in the nonconference contest.
With senior veteran Miller Stuck on the mound for Richard Winn, Fairfield got out to an early 1-0 lead. Stuck walked leadoff batter Nygel Woodard. Woodard stole second and then scored on a one-out Blake Gambrell single to right.
Rylan Woodard took the mound for Fairfield in the bottom of the frame. Stuck lead off with a single, but two strikeouts and a fly out to right ended the inning.
Graeme Douglas scored for Fairfield in top of the third. With two outs, Douglas reached base on a dropped third strike, then advanced to second on a passed ball. Gambrell singled again to right to score Douglas.
Down two in the bottom of the third, a two-run shot from Charlie Bonds tied the score at two.
Stuck and the Eagles would hold Fairfield scoreless in their remaining four at bats.
A two-run single off the bat of Bennett Nicholson in the bottom of the fourth put Richard Winn ahead 4-2.
They added another run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to right from Anthony Armstrong.
Stuck took the seven-inning win. In 26 batters faced, he struck out 14, walked one, allowed three hits and two runs (1 earned).
Rylan Woodard faced 25 batters in his five-inning stretch. He struck out seven, walked two, allowed seven hits and four runs. Gambrell pitched one inning. He struck out one, walked one, allowed two hits and one run.
