WINNSBORO – In a pitcher’s duel on Monday, Fairfield Central defeated Newberry High School 2-1.
After three scoreless innings, Newberry got on the board first in the top of the fourth an error put a Bulldog runner on first, then a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position. A ground out gave the Griffins two outs with a runner on third, but a Fairfield error scored Newberry’s runner.
Fairfield remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Brenton Mack drew a walk with one out. Blake Gambrell singled to left to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Jonathan Warren scored Mack and put Gambrell on third. With two outs, Rylan Woodard singled to score Gambrell and put Fairfield up 2-1.
Woodard picked up the win on the mound. He faced 28 batters in six innings of work. He allowed three hits, one run, struck out five and walked three. Gambrell closed the game. He faced four batters and walked one.
Fairfield will host Westwood on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
The Griffins will play in a spring break tournament April 1 – 3.
