JOHNSTON – After a solid third place region finish with a tight three-point loss to Keenan, Fairfield Central’s girls’ basketball team earned a bid to the 2A SC High School League state championship tournament.
The Griffins, a three-seed, opened the playoffs in Johnston on Feb. 14 against a second-seeded Strom Thurmond team.
Despite the Rebels’ solid second-place region finish, the Griffins controlled the game and took a 54-42 win back to Winnsboro, bumping Strom Thurmond from the playoffs.
Junior Jordyn Adams, recently named Region Player of the Year, had a team-high 29 points. Freshman Jazzlyn McMillan put up 21 points and had 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. McMillan was also named to the All-Region team.
The win propelled the Griffins into their second-round matchup against top-seeded Landrum on Saturday.
Landrum jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter. Fairfield slowed the Cardinal offense in the second, but trailed 37-21 at halftime. Despite tying Landrum 14-14 in the third quarter, the Cardinals powered through the fourth and took a 64-43 final to eliminate Fairfield (11-14, 3-5) from the playoffs.
Landrum matched up with Keenan on Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The winner advances to the semi-final game on Saturday against Silver Bluff or Gray.
