WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central boys’ basketball team picked up their first region win of the season on Tuesday when they hosted Columbia High School. The Griffins held on for a five-point win to give Columbia their first loss in region play with a 47-42 final.
The boys’ win piggybacked on a dominant win from the Griffin girls. Fairfield took down the Columbia girls earlier in the night with a 56-28 win. The win moves the Griffins to 1-2 in region action – their two losses result from forfeits to Gray Collegiate Academy last week.
The girls are on a four-game win streak (excluding the Gray Collegiate forfeits). They beat Scott’s Branch 51-21 in holiday tournament action and opened 2024 with wins over Newberry (59-37) and South Aiken (47-45).
The boys’ win was their fourth of the season. They got back-to-back wins against Buford (63-53) and York (55-48) at the Catawba Ridge Copperhead Basketball Classic on Dec. 29 and 30. They fell to Newberry with a 61-43 final and dropped the game to South Aiken 52-45.
Both Fairfield teams will host Chester tonight for a non-region game before jumping back into region play on Friday at Columbia High School. The girls are set to tip off at 6 p.m.; the boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.
Next week both teams will travel to Hartsville for their last non-region game of the season. They’ll wrap region play with games against Eau Claire Jan. 30 and Feb. 2 and Keenan Feb. 6 and Feb. 8
