Richard Winn’s quest for the region title in Newberry was a battle… until the second quarter. With only a 10-9 lead heading into the second quarter, Richard Winn’s defense stepped up. Though the Eagles only put up 10 points in the period, they allowed only two from Newberry and held a 20-11 lead at halftime.

Newberry would go on to score only 14 points in the second half, while the Eagles put up 26 to take a 56-25 win.

Drew Spires led the offensive charge for the Eagles, putting up 15 points. Charlie Bonds added nine. Miller Stuck had a team-high 12 rebounds and chipped in 9 points. Bonds had nine rebounds. Josh Tyndall also scored nine points.

The Eagles combined for 14 steals on the night. Bennett Nicholson led with three. Stuck, Bonds and Spires each had a pair of steals.

The boys followed Friday night’s blow out region win with another on Tuesday in Johnston. The Eagles took off with 22-6 lead in the first quarter, and the train never left the tracks.

Spires put up 36 points in the 86-42 win over the Patriots. After narrowly missing a double-double against Newberry, Stuck went even further and snagged a triple-double. He tallied 16 points and had team-high 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He also had a team-high 3 blocks. Ethan Steward also had 10 rebounds and seven points on the night. The Eagles racked up 40 rebounds and 24 assists in the win.

Delaney Young (3)

The Eagle girls narrowly edged out Newberry Academy in a low-scoring 26-21 contest. Senior Delaney Young had a team-high 12 points. Meagan Brigman scored 7, and freshman Haley Autry had six.

They followed that tight game with another at Wardlaw, but dropped the Tuesday evening game with a 32-36 final in overtime. Abby Lewis led Eagle scorers with 13 points. Brigman had seven again.

Tuesday’s loss puts the Eagles (5-3) at third place in the region, just behind Cambridge Academy (5-2). Only two region games remain on the girls’ schedule, first against No.1 Laurens Academy (8-0) on Friday and then against Wardlaw Academy on Feb. 5. Both games will be played in Winnsboro.
