Eagles move to 3-0 in region

WINNSBORO – Both Richard Winn basketball teams added another tally in the win column on Friday night as they hosted their third region game of the early season.

The Eagle girls got off to a hot start against Our Lady of the Rosary. Abby Lewis, Delaney Young and Meagan Brigman combined for the team’s 24 first quarter points.

Richard Winn held a 34-10 lead at halftime and extended it to 58-25 by the end of the game.

Lewis and Ella Harrison led Eagle scorers with 12 points apiece. Brigman chipped in 11 points, 9 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Young had seven assists, seven steals, six blocks and five rebounds to go with nine points.

The Eagle win came on the backs of their first loss of the season, a tight 44-40 one to Providence Athletic Club (PAC).

Richard Winn’s boys handled Our Lady of the Rosary as easily as the girls, ending with a 64-33 region win.

The boys game followed much of the same pattern as the girls. Bennett Nicholson, Charlie Bonds, Ethan Steward and Miller Stuck combined for 24 first quarter points. They led 38-18 at halftime and finished with a 64-33 final.

Stuck led scorers with 22 points. Nicholson had 15 points and four steals. Bonds added 14 points and had 12 rebounds and four steals. Stuck had nine rebounds, nine assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Steward had five blocks and eight points.

The boys defeated Sandhills 82-27 on Dec. 13.

Both Eagle teams will break before hosting their annual Christmas Classic on Dec. 28 and 29.

The girls will play Great Falls High School at 2:30 Thursday and Ben Lippen School at 2:30 on Friday. The boys will play Midlands STEM at 4 p.m. on Thursday and take on Ragin Prep at 4 in Friday’s action.

The boys and girls teams return to action quickly in the new year. They’ll travel to Laurens Academy for a region game on Jan. 3 and follow with games in Greenville at Our Lady of the Rosary on Jan. 5.
