Richard George “Dick” Soloway, 93, of Lake Wateree passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Born in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Harry E. and Florence Gilbert Soloway.
Dick attended and graduated from Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina, receiving degrees from both institutions.
Enlisting in the United States Army in March 1947, he retired as a First Sergeant in August 1970. Dick entered the South Carolina State Guard in January 1989 and served as the Command Sergeant Major of the South Carolina State Guard. On March 3, 1995, he was honorably discharged from the State Guard to accept a commission and continued to serve until his retirement with the rank of Lieutenant Colonial in January 1998.
His active-duty service included tours in Japan, Korea, Germany, Panama, and Vietnam, serving with the 8th Field Artillery Battalion, 2cd Infantry Regiment, 10th Infantry Regiment, 7th Calvary Regiment, 5th Calvary Regiment, and 35th Infantry Regiment.
Dick’s military awards include, the Silver Star, Bronze Star and V Device and three oak lead clusters, Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, Air Metal, Army Commendation Medal with V Device and two oak leaf clusters, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm. On May 2, 1998, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by the Governor as a distinguished citizen.
A true military man, Dick loved his family and will be truly missed.
Funeral services were held on 11:00 am Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery conducted with full military honors. The service was live streamed on the Facebook page of Pope Funeral Home.
