COLUMBIA – The Westwood football team opened the 2023 season in fine fashion Friday night with new R2 Superintendent Dr. Kim Moore in attendance as the Redhawks dominated Spring Valley 27-7 at Harry Parone Stadium.
After a field goal from their first drive, Westwood hit the end zone on a 22-yard touchdown run by Antwan Nelson.
Quentin McCall found the end zone next for the Redhawks on a third-and-one 30-yard run in the second quarter to put Westwood up 17-0 after a successful PAT. Another field goal put the Redhawks on top 20-0 at halftime.
Spring Valley picked up 6 with a touchdown pass in the third quarter. A good PAT put Westwood up 20-7 through the end of the third.
On first-and-ten from the Spring Valley 1 yard line, a fumbled Viking handoff in the endzone resulted in recovery by Ako Taylor for another score with just under nine minutes left in the game. Another successful PAT put Westwood up 27-7.
Westwood tallied 244 total yards of offense to Spring Valley’s 184.
Up next, Westwood heads to Lower Richland and Spring Valley plays host to White Knoll Friday.
