HEMINGWAY – Fairfield Central is back in the saddle. After shutting out Spring Valley last week in a pre-season jamboree, the Griffins took to Hemingway for their season opener against Carvers Bay. This time, their shut-out was a complete game.
Fairfield went up 7-0 in the opening quarter and never looked back. They put up 10 in the second quarter, 10 in the third, and 14 in the fourth quarter for the 41-0 final.
Dominating on both sides of the ball, the Griffins took a 41-0 win over the Class A Bears.
The Griffin defense amassed 67 tackles – 24 solo, 43 assists – in the win. Sophomore Douglas McCloud had 12 tackles, 5 solo, 1 sack, and 2 tackles for loss. Chancery Turner assisted on 11 tackles, 2 for loss. Senior Amos Bell had nine total tackles – 6 solo, 1 sack, and 3 for loss. Myles Robertson also had a sack and three tackles for loss, collecting 7 total tackles (5 solo). Christopher Pearson, Antario James and Turner were credited with forced fumbles. Pearson recovered a fumble.
Fairfield’s offense churned out yards… and points. Sophomore quarterback Cam McMillon was 14-21 through the air for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Ford Davis threw 3-4 for 26 yards.
Griffin standout receiver TyDarion Grier had six receptions on the night for 101 yards. Senior KJ Golden had five receptions for 63 yards. Drae Walker caught two passes for 33 yards. Myles Robertson, Jayden Boyd and Christian Hingleton all had single catches for double-digit yardage. Robertson collected 30 yards, Boyd 26, and Hingleton 10.
Robertson also rushed for 33 yards and two scores on 9 carries. Junior Steven Gadsden had two carries for 34 yards. Erik Martinez chipped in four points on PATs.
Now at 1-0 in the early season, the Griffins head into a Week 1 home matchup against Andrew Jackson High School. The game will be the Volunteers’ first of the 2023 season. They finished 2022 season with an 11-3 record, losing Fairfield in their season opener 41-21.
Kickoff at EK McLendon Stadium is set for 7:30.
