COLLETON – Westwood’s softball team made a valiant effort to keep their postseason alive, but Colleton County’s late surge proved too much to overcome in a 10-7 loss.
With the score tied 4-4 through 4 ½ innings, the Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Westwood (16-7-1) cut the lead to 8-7 with three runs in the sixth, but Colleton County got two in the bottom of that inning to seal the win.
After opening the Lower state Bracket 2 tournament with a 10-0 win over Lucy Beckham, the Westwood softball team lost 10-0 at West Florence Thursday, but picked up a losers bracket win by eliminating A.C. Flora 5-1 Saturday.
Colleton County (24-3) advances to play North Myrtle Beach today.
