WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central’s baseball and softball teams hosted Liberty High School on Tuesday in the first round of the SCHSL 2A State Playoffs. The Griffin teams entered as #2 seeds in their district bracket, but both dropped games to Liberty.
Fairfield baseball took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Liberty put up three in the top of the second. The Red Devils held the 3-2 lead until the bottom of the fourth, when the Griffins regained the lead 4-3.
Liberty responded with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. Fairfield rallied for three runs in the sixth to close the gap, but remained scoreless in the seventh to take the 8-7 loss.
The loss pits #2 Fairfield (11-9) against #4 Fox Creek (12-11) in tonight’s elimination game in Winnsboro. The winner will advance to face the loser of Mid-Carolina/Liberty on Saturday, then go on to the District Championship game, to be played on May 8.
Griffin softball dropped the home playoff game to Liberty with a 16-0 final. They will face the lower of Wednesday’s Mid-Carolina/ Silver Bluff game on Friday. The winner will advance to the next round on Monday and play for a chance to compete in the District Finals on May 10.
