WINNSBORO – When SCISA released the 1A baseball state playoff bracket, only three opponents stood between Richard Winn Academy and a SCISA State Title. And the Eagles have already knocked off one of those in decisive style.
Richard Winn took down familiar foe Oconee Christian in a best of three series. The Eagles took game one on Monday 12-2 and game two on Tuesday 13-1. Both games ended the fifth inning via the ten-run mercy rule.
Monday’s 12-2 win came off of the Eagles 10 hits and Oconee’s eight walked batters and four errors. Charlie Bonds homered and doubled in the win, racking up three RBIs. Connor Little also had three RBIs off of a double and a single. Miller Stuck also doubled in the win.
Anthony Armstrong worked all five innings from the mound. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out three.
Tuesday’s win was much of the same – this time the Eagles had 13 hits. Oconee walked six and had three errors. Charlie Bonds doubled and homered again, this time amassing four RBIs. Armstrong also had a double. Landon Caulder was credited with three runs batted in.
In 21 batters faced, Charlie Bonds struck out 10, allowed one run and six hits.
The Eagles will face off with another familiar opponent, King Academy, in the next best-of-three series. Game one will be played Monday at Richard Winn. Tuesday’s game will be at King Academy. A third game, if needed, will be played Thursday at Richard Winn.
The Eagles (21-0) knocked off King twice this season in region contests, first 14-2 in six innings and then 11-1 in five innings.
The winner of the Richard Winn/ King series will advance to the State Championship series on May 15, 16 and 18 to take on the winner of lower bracket. As of press time, three teams remain in the lower bracket: Jefferson Davis advanced to the semi-final round and will face the winner of Thursday’s Holly Hill/Wardlaw game. Should the Eagles defeat King, Richard Winn would play host for the May 15 game.
