Redhawks win big at Irmo

BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood softball team got back into the swing of things with a 12-6 win at Irmo Tuesday.

Azaria Belton went 3-for-6 with a grand slam home run and 5 RBI on the night to lead the Redhawks (8-5-1).

Marguerite Ridgeway and Parker Horton had two hits apiece. Makayla Drakeford had two RBI.

Drakeford also pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits, striking out seven and walking just one.

Belton’s blast came in the top of the second. Westwood trailed 4-0 after the first inning but got a run back early in the second inning when Olivia Burroughs drove in Reagan Remia on a single to left.

After Burroughs’ hit, Horton singled and Taylor Blevines was hit by a pitch to set the table for Belton. Belton took the first pitch and slammed a fly ball over the fence in centerfield to give the Redhawks a 5-4 lead.

Irmo tied it up with a run in the bottom of the second, but Westwood scored five more runs in the fourth inning to make it 10-5.

The Yellow Jackets scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Redhawks got two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to seal the win.

Westwood took advantage of 6 Yellow Jackets errors to go along with 11 Redhawks hits, all of them singles excepting Belton’s homer.

Westwood plays host to Irmo today, plays host to South Pointe Monday, and is at Richland Northeast Tuesday.
