NEWBERRY – Richard Winn returned from Spring Break to put another notch in their belt with a 18-0 shutout of Newberry Academy on Tuesday.
Junior Miller Stuck threw all four innings of the game and allowed only one hit in 15 batters faced. He walked one and struck out seven.
Stuck walked to lead off the top of the first and stole second. With one out, sophomore Charlie Bonds went yard to center to put the Eagles up 2-0 early. Rob Wilson reached on a fielding error, and a line drive single to center from Lawson Wade scored Wilson. A groundout and a tag stealing home sent the Eagles to the field with a 3-0 lead.
Now on the mound, Stuck walked the first (and only) batter of the day. A flyout and two strikeouts followed to strand the Newberry runner on third.
Anthony Armstrong singled to lead off the top of the second. Connor Little reached base on a fielder’s choice that got Armstrong out at second. Little advanced to second on a passed ball. Stuck got on on a fielding error that also scored Little. Stuck took second and advanced to third on a grounder from Jacob Chaisson. Chaisson reached base on an error by the Newberry first baseman. Bonds walked to load the bases.
Wilson singled on a line drive to center to score one. Wade drew a bases-loaded walk to score another and put the Eagles on top 6-0 before a fly out to right ended their run in the top of the second.
Both teams went without baserunners until the fourth inning, when the Eagles added 12 runs to insure the win.
Stuck singled on a line drive to left to lead off the top of the fourth. Chaisson followed with a single to center that scored Stuck. Chaisson advanced to second on an error. With one on again, Charlie Bonds knocked another two-run homer to center. The Eagles led 9-0 with no outs.
Rob Wilson singled to center. Wade flew out to shortstop for the Eagles’ first out. Caulder reached base on an error off of a hard ground ball to short, advancing Wilson to third. Another fielding error off the bat of Armstrong scored Wilson and put runners on first and second.
With two outs, Landon Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stuck hit a fly ball to left, reaching on an error that scored two and put Smith on second. Chaisson singled to right to score Smith and advanced to second on the throw.
Charlie Bonds returned to the plate with a pair of two-run homers under his belt. With runners on second and third, Bonds doubled to center to score both and put the Eagles up 15-0.
Wilson singled on a hard ground ball to short, and Wade followed with an RBI single to left. Caulder singled next to score Wilson and put Wade on third. Runners on the corners, Armstrong singled to score Wade. Travis Bonds singled next to load the bases, but a ground out ended the inning. Richard Winn held an 18-0 lead after just 3.5 innings.
Newberry K’d to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but got two runners on quickly and looked to ignite some offense of their own. A fielder’s choice put runners on the corners for Newberry, but a fly out to second stranded the runners and ended the game.
The win was the Eagles’ 17th of the season and their ninth game of the season that ended early via mercy rule. Seeming potent on both sides of the ball, the Eagles have notched 169 runs in 17 games and held their opponents to only 29. They’ve also notched seven shutouts in their 17 wins.
The Eagles travel to King on Friday for another region game, then will host cross-town rival Fairfield Central on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. In their last meeting, Richard Winn took a 5-2 win over the Griffins.
