Three Fairfield Electric Cooperative (FEC) board members recently received credentials from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). William Michael Good earned his Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) Certificate. Derial L. Ogburn and Peggy D. Swearingen received the Board Leadership Certificate (BLC).
An ever-changing business environment has imposed new demands on electric cooperative directors, requiring increased knowledge of changes in the electric utility business, new governance skills and a solid knowledge of the cooperative principles and business model. FEC says they have a commitment to work through NRECA to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit of their electric cooperative consumer-owners.
The NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) program requires attendance and demonstrated understanding of the basic competencies contained in five core courses: Director Duties and Liabilities, Understanding the Electric Business, Board Operations and Process, Strategic Planning, and Financial Decision Making.
The NRECA Board Leadership Certificate (BLC) recognizes individuals who continue their professional development after becoming a Credentialed Cooperative Director. In order to attain the BLC, the trustees had to complete 10 credits in advanced, issues-oriented courses.
NRECA represents the nation’s more than 900 private, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide electric service to more than 42 million people in 47 states.
Fairfield Electric Cooperative is one of twenty electric cooperatives in South Carolina and serves more than 32,000 member- consumers in Fairfield, Kershaw, Richland, Chester, and York counties.
