WINNSBORO – Before breaking for Christmas, both Richard Winn basketball teams added a few marks to their win columns.
After dropping a region game to Cambridge on Dec. 9, the Eagle girls clenched their second region win of the season in Seneca against Oconee Christian Academy.
The Eagles took an early lead over Oconee, thanks in part to Brinson Baker’s hot hand from behind the arc, and never relinquished it. Baker put up 9 points in the first quarter and finished the game with an 80% 3-point field goal percentage.
A big 9-point second quarter by Meagan Brigman put the Eagles up 22-13 at halftime.
Richard Winn found themselves in a battle for the third quarter as the Warriors outscored them 8-7 in the period. Seeing their lead dwindle, the Eagles held Oconee to only five points in the fourth while they put in 12 of their own for a 41-26 final.
Brigman led scorers with 15 points. Baker finished with 12 and freshman Abby Lewis had 10. Brigman crashed the boards with a team-high 13 rebounds. She also had three assists, two steals and a block. Delaney Young had four assists, a pair of rebounds and a steal. Both Baker and Lewis had a pair of steals each.
The Eagles hit a two-game streak with a Dec. 20 win over Whitmire High School in Winnsboro. The Eagles dominated from tipoff, putting up 12 points in each of the first three quarters and holding the Wolverines to only six. They finished with a 44-8 final.
Young led scorers with 18 points. Brigman put in 12 points and snagged 12 rebounds. She also finished with 3 assists, three steals and two blocks. Young had five steals, three blocks and three assists. Baker had five rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block.
The Eagle boys added three to their win column before breaking for Christmas. They took region wins over Oconee Christian and Our Lady of the Rosary and added a non-region win over Ragin Prep Christian Academy.
The Eagles got off to a slow start at Oconee on Dec. 17. Up 8-3 after a quarter of play, the Eagle offense found its footing and doubled its output in the second quarter for a 24-8 lead at the intermission. They finished with a 55-31 final.
Senior Lawson Wade led scorers with 24 points. Miller Stuck followed with 11.
Back in Winnsboro on Dec. 20, the Eagles faced a new region team, Our Lady of the Rosary. The Lions gave the Eagles their first challenge of the season, but Richard Winn came away with a 59-48 win to move to 4-0 in region play.
Junior Drew Spires led scorers with 20. He added four assists, a steal and a block. Senior Rob Wilson added 14 points, 8 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Wade had 12 points, two steals, and a team-high 9 rebounds. Stuck had seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Landon Caulder had four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
The Eagles returned to the court on Dec. 21 for a 48-34 home win over Ragin Prep.
Spires led scorers with 21 points. Wade had 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. He added four blocks, four steals and three assists. Stuck had a team-high five assists and six rebounds.
The win puts the Eagles at 6-0 on the young season.
Richard Winn opened their Christmas Tournament yesterday, but scores were not available at press time. The girls faced Ben Lippen and the boys battled Ragin Prep for the third time in Wednesday action. Today, the Eagles will both face Westminster. The girls’ tipoff is set for 2:30 and the boys will follow.
