WINNSBORO – During a student assembly on Tuesday in the gymnasium of the Fairfield County Magnet School for Math and Science, the Town of Winnsboro’s mayor and town council members presented the school’s principal, Dr. Shayera Gale Whitfield, with a proclamation for the school being one of five in the state to be named a National Blue Ribbon School.
“There are some important people here to see you all today,” Superintendent J. R. Green told the students. “Usually we have to go to them, but what you all have done is so important, they’ve come here to see you.”
When Winnsboro Mayor John McMeekin addressed the students, asking how they were, the students answered enthusiastically and loudly, “Good, we’re fine!” That was followed by enthusiastic cheering.
“Dr. Whitfield, along with teachers, staff and the entire school community of the Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science are to be commended for this outstanding achievement,” McMeekin said.
Following the presentation, the students all filed by to shake the hands of the mayor and council members and thank them for the proclamation.
“It was truly a wonderful assembly, “McMeekin said, “and a special experience to meet with the students. They were delightful.”
National Blue Ribbon Schools are recognized for their outstanding academic achievement, leadership, professional development and instructional programs, the proclamation said.
