SPARTANBURG – Richard Winn traveled to Spartanburg on Friday, October 14, hoping to end their three-game losing streak on the road against the Oakbrook Preparatory School Knights.
The Eagles outscored the Knights in every quarter of play, and accumulated 433 total yards of offense. Quarterback Landon Caulder accounted for six of the Eagles’ seven scores, throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for two. Caulder completed 15 passes in 24 attempts for 249 yards. Drew Spires hauled in eight balls for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Rob Wilson caught two passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, and Lawson Wade had two receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Wilson led the Eagles’ ground game with five carries for 78 yards and a score, followed by Caulder who scored twice while running for 45 yards on six tries. Spires gained 25 yards on four runs and Landon Smith rushed for 21 yards. Jacob Chaisson rounded out the ground game with 15 yards on five carries. The Eagles rushed for 184 yards in total.
Eagles Head Coach Paul Brigman was pleased with the victory.
“I felt like we played better,”’ Brigman said. “We needed a win and our guys stepped up.”
Connor Little led the Eagle defense with 16 tackles. Wade recorded 12 stops with a sack, while Travis Bonds logged 10 tackles. Ethan Steward and Eli Smith posted a sack each. The Eagles defense restricted the Knights to 234 yards of offense and allowed just three scores.
Brigman acknowledged the change in energy after the first quarter
“After being a little sluggish early our defense really played well the last three quarters of the game,” he said. “We hope this gives us momentum to finish up region play strong, and into the playoffs.”
The Eagles will need that momentum as they head into Senior Night this week. Richard Winn will host the Wardlaw Academy Patriots on Friday at Ruff Field in Winnsboro. The Eagles defeated the Patriots earlier this season, relying on exceptional defensive play. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
