Eagles head for post-season tournament weekend

WINNSBORO – Richard Winn celebrated their five volleyball seniors at last week’s final home match against Region leader Laurens Academy. The Eagles took to the court with strength, overpowering the Laurens team 25-19 in the first game. Laurens regrouped, and the Eagles dropped the next three games to surrender the match.

Lila Smith led the Eagles with 31 digs, 14 kills, 12 assists and two aces. Dani Goings had 11 kills. Maggie Hughes had 18 digs.

Richard Winn followed up their last regular season game with the Region Tournament on Saturday.  With a fourth place finish in the region, the Eagles faced off with fifth place Wardlaw in their first match of the day. Richard Winn won the first set 25-22, then dropped the second 21-25 before winning the third 15-10 to advance to a semi-final match against Laurens later in the day.

Goings led the Eagle offense with 10 kills. Smith followed with 8 kills and 10 digs. Meagan Brigman tallied two blocks and three aces. Hughes had 12 digs.

Richard Winn battled through the first game, but dropped a tight 23-25 contest. Laurens took the second game more decidely with a 25-16 final to advance to the title game against Cambridge.  Laurens went on to win the tournament 3-1 over Cambridge on Tuesday.

Goings had 10 kills in thte match; Smith put up 6 kills and tallied 21 digs. Anna Livermore had 11 digs.  Brigman had three kills and three aces.

This weekend, the Eagles, now 13-10 on the season, will take to Myrtle Beach for the two-day, double-elimination SCISA A State Tournament, which begins on Friday.

They will face Community Christian to open the tournament at 11 a.m. Pending the outcome of the game, the Eagles will play the winner or loser of Holly Hill and Newberry Academy at 4:15 p.m. If the Eagles survive either of their first two matches, they will play again at 4:15 for a chance to advance to Saturday’s games.
