WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central opened their 2022 football season in style – it was a blowout. A 62-14 blowout.
The Griffins, a Class AA school, far outmatched the Class A Carvers Bay team Region out of Hemingway.
Freshman quarterback Cameron McMillon threw for 315 yards and 5 touchdowns, with 18 completions in 23 attempts.
Fairfield had 19 receptions on the night. Sophomore TyDarian Greer had 168 yards and two touchdowns in 7 receptions. Senior Jai Boyd tallied 123 yards and three touchdowns in five receptions. Senior Donovan Watkins had three receptions for 25 yards. Junior Roger Burns added a sixth receiving touchdown.
Sophomore Steven Gadsden had 26 cards in 4 carries. Kensley Copeland had 19 yards in 4 carries and a touchdown.
Watkins had a 90 yard kick return for 115 all-purpose yards; Grier had two punt returns for 40 yards giving him 208 all-purpose yards; and senior Stephano Gadsden had a 22 yard kick return.
Seniors JaShaun Manning and Josh Green led the defense with 9 tackles each. Stephano Gadsden tallied 5 and Amos Bell had four. Senior CJ Sampson had Fairfield’s only sack of the night.
Watkins, Manning, Jalian Yarborough and Myles Robertson each had an interception. Stephano Gadsden and Sampson each tallied a defended pass.
Sophomore Hezekiah Childers had 8 PATs in nine attempts.
Fairfield Central will face off with Andrew Jackson on Friday in Kershaw. The Griffins will return to Winnsboro on Sept. 2 to host Chester. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
